Selecting Parts and Adapters That Fit Your Pressure Washer

A Guide to Pressure Washer Connectors

When looking to add a new spray gun, a new hose, or a quick-connect set to an existing pressure washer, the components may not always fit together correctly. In these cases, an adapter will be required.

Whether searching for components that match a specific unit or searching for adapters, it is important to know which connections the unit currently possesses.

Gas pressure washers are more universal, making it easier to match various accessories and couplings to them. However, electric pressure washers tend to be mostly brand-specific, meaning only specific accessories or parts from the same manufacturer will be compatible.

Gas Pressure Washer Attachments

There are only three basic types of connections used on gas units: M22, 3/8" threaded, and Quick Connects. The only exception involves the gun and lance. Gun and lance components can be M22 or 1/4"; therefore, when selecting attachments or a coupling to attach a lance to a gun, it is necessary to determine whether M22 or 1/4" is required.

connections chart

All M22 connections found on gas units are 14mm. The 15mm M22 fittings are used only on select electric pressure washers. Therefore, it is important to ensure that if a gas unit is being used, 14mm M22 fittings are selected.

The 3/8" threaded connections may look very similar to M22 fittings, but they are not the same. Because 3/8" attachments are narrower, they will not work with the same ports or adapters. Some units require these specific fittings, so it is necessary to determine whether a connection is 3/8" or M22.

compatibility chart

Quick Connect couplings are easier to identify, but the adapter end must be compatible with the pressure washer's M22 or 3/8" connection. These do not have threads on both ends; instead, Quick Connect attachments are designed to snap into one another without any twisting.

Joining two parts together requires a male fitting and a female fitting. Male attachments have threading on the outside, and female attachments have threading on the inside, allowing the male to thread into the female. Although Quick Connect couplings lack threading, the male end still fits inside the female end. Two male or two female fittings will not work together, so it is necessary to use one of each.

NOTE: The diameter of the hose itself does not indicate the required fitting size. The fitting at the end of the hose is what must match the connection point. For example, a 1/4" hose simply has a 1/4" internal diameter but may feature an M22, 3/8" threaded, or Quick Connect fitting at the ends.

Electric Pressure Washer Attachments

When selecting couplings, adapters, or accessories for an electric pressure washer, it is important to keep in mind that most of these units are brand-specific regarding their attachments.

Because manufacturers often design components to be unique to their own brand, compatibility is typically limited to that specific manufacturer. This is primarily observed in electric models, whereas gas models tend to be more universal.

Consequently, when looking for a new spray gun, a new hose, or the incorporation of Quick Connects, the most reliable approach is to stick with the same brand and ensure the chosen item is compatible with the specific pressure washer model.

While it may be possible to adapt some off-brand accessories to fit an electric pressure washer, it is generally not advisable due to potential pressure loss and leaks. Compatibility lists are typically provided at the bottom of product pages. The details on any accessory or coupling should always be verified to ensure a proper match. If a compatible item is not available, the manufacturer can be contacted directly to find the correct fit.
